Assignment 11- Topographic Survey

  • 2, I really didn't know much about this survey method before.  I had also never used these GPS's before.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert)
  • 3.5, I learned a lot about the tools we used in the class figured out how to operate the GPS.
3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree)
  • 5, hands on learning is always helpful.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • I think having more hands on time with the GPS would have helped, however we only had a limited amount of points we could take.

Assignment 10- Arc Collector Part Two: Litter

  • 4, I had used Arc Collector before in my internship and in the past assignment so it was very familiar

  • 4.8, I learned a lot more, especially from the mistakes I made.

  • 5, hands on learning always helps.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • I liked using Arc Collector again and learning more about it.  I wish we could have gone over importing and exporting the feature classes again because I struggled with that a little bit.

Assignment 9- Arc Collector Part One: Microclimates

  • 2, I had used Arc Collector in my internship so I knew the basics, but there was still a lot more to learn about collector.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert)
  • 4.5, I learned how to really use Arc Collector and what it can do for data collection.

  • 5, hands on learning really helped.  I liked that we had quick instructions and then went outside.  We made some mistakes, but they were easy to fix and figure out.

  • I thought this activity was simple to figure out and very useful.

Assignment 8- Navigation with a Map and Compass
1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at all, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this)
  • 1.5, I didn't know how to navigate in the field at all without a GPS.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert)
  • 4.5, I learned a lot by going out into the field and working with a team.

  • 5, hands on learning helped a lot.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • I think a practice test before this would help in answering some issues the group had in the field.

Assignment 7- Development of a Field Navigation Map

  • 2.5, I know how to use ArcMap and produce a good map, but the grid was difficult

  • 4, I liked creating these maps and hope they do well in the field.

  • 4, yes this helped.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • Some more in depth instruction in the guide would help to answer some questions we all had.

Assignment 6- Conduction a Distance Azimuth Survey

  • 1.5, I had very little knowledge on this subject before this assignment.

  • 3, I learned some, but it would be nice to have more to work with in this assignment.

  • I wish we could have worked more with this data and the instruments.

Assignment 5- Visualizing and Refining Terrain Data

  • 1.5, I had very little knowledge on this subject before this assignment.

  • 3.5, I learned so much and liked working in a team to learn more.

  • 5, hands on learning helped a lot.

  • Working with ArcScene and learning how to use it more would be nice.

Assignment 4- Creating a DEM

  • 2, I had very little knowledge on this subject before this assignment.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert)
  • 3.5, I learned a lot through trial and error through this assignment.  It was also nice to work in a team and learn from out mistakes and build off of ideas together.
3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree)
  • 5, the hands on approach and minimal discussion really helped me to learn all that I could in this assignment. 
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • I think that even less instructions would be okay.  It's good to learn from trial and error in these assignments even if it can be very frustrating.
Assignment 3- Cemetery Mapping

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at all, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this)
  • 4.2, I understood this assignment well and previous classes helped on the knowledge of the topic when it came to using ArcMap and producing good maps.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert)
  • 4.5, I can always improve, but I have learned a lot in this assignment.
3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree)
  • 4.5, the hands on approach always helps when I learn.  Working with classmates really helped give new ideas as well.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • I think that working more as a class may have helped this assignment go more smoothly, but ultimately I am happy with the results.
Assignment 2- Cemetery Data Collection: Part 2

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at all, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this)
  • 4, I had a good amount of knowledge because of the previous assignment.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert)
  • 4.3,  I would say that I learned a lot, but I can always improve upon these skills.
3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree)
  • 4, the hands-on approach always helps me learn more than the traditional lecture approach.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make this activity even better?
  • I would say more planning would make things more successful, but ultimately it was a good and useful activity.  It was nice to work together as a class.

Assignment 1- Cemetery Data Collection: Part 1

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at all, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this).
  • 3, I had some previous knowledge on collecting data and the ways to do it.  Some of it was basic knowledge and didn't seem very difficult, but I knew there was more to learn.
2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert).
  • 4, I applied what I had already known before the activity.  Some of my methods were improved upon after consulting with others in the class.  I learned some new way of collecting data which I can apply to future occasions.
3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree)
  • 5, if this were explained through a lecture I wouldn't have learned as much.  By being out in the field and learning from others and my own mistakes I improved greatly.
4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better?
  • I would recommend that the class work together a little more organized.  We eventually got the data we needed, but it seemed a little messy.  While we changed out methods in the field (skipping GPS points for the sake of time) I think it was important to the data collection. We learned the first plan doesn't always work out like we expect.
